Breaking: U-Michigan Having Trouble Selling Tickets, advertising on WJR

by: chetly

Thu Jul 02, 2009 at 08:03:23 AM EDT

I don't know whether it was a paid ad or just a plug by Paul W. Smith, but just seconds ago he announced, with the caveat that he "doesn't know if [he] could ever remember U-M football tickets being offered this way".  He proceeded to describe an offer of season ticket packages for all 8 home games that were a one-time opportunity (no renewal privileges).

You know, I don't ever remember tickets being available like that either, let alone at this late date in the year.

I dare say Michigan's football program might be suffering a small dip in demand.  Some of that is demand driven no doubt - the economy has depressed everyone's boat.  But another part is supply - the quality of the Michigan product is in jeopardy for the first time, with Michigan's abysmal performance last year.

Tickets (0.00 / 0)
Yeah, I just got an e-mail from the Alumni Association: All eight games for $400. If we were talking 10 games (even if two of them were preseason like with the Lions) then maybe I'd bite, but not at that price. The old saying at Michigan stadium that "you are apart of the largest crowd watching a football game anywhere in America today" ceased to be true just last season. Penn State led last year in attendance even though Michigan still has the largest capacity.

Several things.. (0.00 / 0)
Because of a particular "title" law...  U of M had to spend a larger percentage of its football program generated funds on lesser sports.  To offer scholarships to programs that cannot pay for themselves.

So what did they do?  They "license" the ability to buy the tickets..  Instead of simply raising the ticket price, they charge a fee for the right to purchase tickets.. ($250 a seat for the season..)

Then of course the economy...

Then of course gasoline prices

Then there was this part where they thought they were going to make more from upgrading the big house..  OOPs.. Now as a result of the lawsuit, ( ADA.. how appropriate) and the resulting loss of grandfathered protections, there are fewer seats available.  Though this doesn't cause a drop in demand on its own, the are some who have lost faith in the management, and thrown up their hands.

THEN there is Rodriguez..  Personally, I am not worried about the last part, but he MUST show a little more team cohesion this year, or ..well who knows with Michigan anymore..
